Sad to hear about Steve. We dated on/off and I was his date to the senior prom. The last time we saw each other was Christmas break 1966. He was attending the US Naval Academy.
Steve and I were good friends at Hialeah High because we had at least several classes together and we were always joking around together. Steve was involved in a lot of activities while at HHS because he's all over our class yearbook. Like most people, I lost track of him after we graduated but I ran into him in late 1999 at Dr. Scott Halperin's office at Palmetto General Hospital's professional building in Hialeah. He was leaving after the doctor saw him and I had just been called in. We recognized each other despite the passage of 34 years and we had a several minute chat before our doctor called me in and ended our conversation. Steve told me he was working for a company in Doral just west of the airport and we exchanged business cards and we agreed to contact each other to have lunch together since we worked within a couple of miles of each other. Before we could have that lunch (darn it!) he died in an auto accident on March 19, 2000. I heard that he was going up to his brother's home so they could fish in Lake Okeechobee for the day.
The below information is from a Sun-Sentinel article on March 20, 2000, regarding Steve's accident:
A single-car crash Sunday morning on I-75 claimed a Pembroke Pines man's life.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Steve B. Brasecker, 53, died at the scene when his 1997 Chrysler struck a patch of standing water in the inside westbound lane of I-75 near Bonaventure Boulevard.
Brasecker lost control and smashed into a guardrail and concrete wall, troopers said. His car came to rest in the outside lane, facing the opposite direction.
BRASECKER - Steve Bergman, 53, of Pembroke Pines, FL died Sunday, March 19, 2000. Member of American Legion Post 0400. Survived by wife, Wendy; son, Scott of SC; step-children, Melissa (Matt) Gallagher and Johnathan Keller, both of FL; brother, Carey (Kay) of LaBelle, FL; and 3 grandchildren.
Funeral service 2:00 PM Tuesday with Dr. Larry G. Purvis officiating at FRED HUNTER'S HOLLYWOOD MEMORIAL GARDENS HOME, 6301 Taft Street, where friends may call Tuesday (today) 1:00 PM to service time. Burial HOLLYWOOD MEMORIAL GARDENS.
Rest In Peace, Steve, you were a good guy and a great classmate at HHS! I'm sorry we never had that lunch together and that you passed away so early in life.
